Geer was captured on 4 April 1862.  His unit was part of the Federal patrols sent out looking for Confederate cavalry in the days before the battle started.  While being captured, a Confederate soldier swung his musket at Geer and Geer tried to parry the blow using his hand.  The musket hit his hand, causing a severe wound, including breaking his 2nd finger, which was maimed for life.  Geer can be seen wearing a sling in this image to protect his hand.  Collins was captured on 6 April 1862, two days after Geer, on the 1st day of the Battle of Shiloh.  Later while in Confederate custody they managed to escape and make their way back to Federal lines.  Upon making it back, they had this image taken, showing their condition during their confinement.
