The above article (and another just like it, which appeared in the Richmond Enquirer of 8 APR 1862, page 3, last column) is of interest for a number of reasons:

  • confirms the arrival at Richmond of news from the Battlefield on April 7th
  • illustrates that "Battle of Shiloh" was the name applied, even before that battle ended;
  • because of the assertion by General Beauregard of "Complete Victory," news of the Battle of Shiloh remained a daily feature in major newspapers in the South, with every opportunity taken to provide "evidence" for that Southern Victory (called into question by Northern newspapers; and letters from Southern veterans of Shiloh reporting the truth to the folks at home). The fixation on Shiloh only ended with the revelation of even more bad news: the indisputable Loss of New Orleans.
