Davis was mortally wounded at Shiloh.  Evacuated north, he died in a hospital in Paducah, Kentucky due to his wounds on 15 April 1862.  The 28th Illinois initially buried their dead that were left on the battlefield in a burial trench on top of one of the Indian Mounds by the river, but those remains were later removed to the National Cemetery.
