Cpt. Gustave Cook, Company H, 8th Texas Cavalry, Terry's Texas Rangers
Cook was wounded at Shiloh, his right leg broken by a musket ball. Enlisting as an Ordnance Sergeant, Cook later rose to the rank of Colonel. In this image, Cook is handing orders to a subordinate. The black man wearing a kepi in the background is holding a blanket. He is presumably doing so because otherwise Cook's light jacket would blend into the canvas backdrop.
