1st Lt. Jason Massey Fairbanks, Confederate Engineers, Clerk/Aide to Generals Hardee & Bragg
Flag on display in Sewanee, Tennessee at the University of the South, as of 2013. This flag was said to have been carried by Lt. Fairbanks at the Battle of Shiloh. Fairbanks was said to have torn the fringe off of the flag and concealed it under his coat so that it would not be captured at Shiloh. Jason Fairbanks gave the flag to his brother, George R. Fairbanks, one of the founders of the University of the South. Other particulars of this flag are unknown to this writer. More information could be gleaned by contacting the Univ. of the South.
It is unknown if this flag belonged to a particular regiment, or in what capacity it was being carried; nor is any information known as to the circumstances of its near capture and the need for concealing it. Further research on this flag would be interesting, but the story related is what is present on the informational plaque beside the flag on display.
