Hastings died of disease on 28 April 1862 at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee.  Many Federal soldiers at Pittsburg Landing survived the fighting only to die due to disease in the weeks following the battle while still encamped on the battlefield.  Camp conditions saw disease spread like wildfire; with the added detritus from the battle, the water, soil, and even the air around Shiloh were polluted, thus amplifying the spread of disease even more.
