Dr. Charles Bonner, father of writer Kate Sherwood Bonner, lived on Salem Street in Holly Springs, Mississippi.  Dr. Bonner, a native of Ireland, treated casualties from Shiloh at a hospital set up by the state. He also treated wounded from other battles in northern Mississippi. He died in the 1878 yellow fever outbreak along with his son. The picture was taken in Memphis and has a revenue stamp on the back, dating to around the end of the war.  He built his house, Cedarhurst, in 1857. The home was a makeshift hospital during the Civil War and the headquarters of the commander of the 4th Military District during Reconstruction.  His daughter, Kate Sherwood Bonner, was a feminist who studied under Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
