Happy birthday, Mona!

[presented on YouTube by Channel Stop April 17th 2013: "The Horse in Motion" compiled by Earweard Muybridge]

For this year's birthday submission, thought it might be appropriate to follow on our discussion of "speed of the horse" with the very first motion picture created by Eadweard Muybridge in 1878 (following on his study of "Motion of the Horse.") To give some background, noted photographer Muybridge was commissioned in 1872 by former Governor of California, Leland Stanford, to help solve an "urban legend" involving "the horse in motion." One camp believed that regardless of speed, the horse always "kept one foot on the ground," while the other camp claimed that there was a point during gallop of the horse at which all four feet of the horse were clear of the ground.

Making use of Stanford's horse, Occident, Muybridge devised an experiment involving twelve cameras with shutters attached to trip-wires to capture images of the horse: the result looked similar to the above collection of still shots, arranged in sequence to suggest motion.

Eadweard Muybridge had no direct connection to Battle of Shiloh; however, he did meet Henry Halleck, and accompanied the General on a photographic tour of recent-purchase Alaska in 1868 (the result of which may have brought the photographer to the attention of Leland Stanford... and the rest is history.)

Have a great day!

Ozzy
