Civilian casualty

Recommended Posts

An interesting tidbit about Shiloh civilians. Two brothers, the Sowell Brothers, and their families lived on the west side of the battle field on the Sowell field. This area is today, the picnic area. George Washington Sowell evacuated his family for safety, north of the battle field, across the Snake Creek. He returned to retrieve some valuables left behind and was killed on his front porch. He was shot and not killed by a shell. His brother John and his family, including all six of his children were still in their cabin during the battle. John was seriously ill with tuberculosis, and died soon after the battle. This story is told by the widow Sowell in the book "Lone Survivor At Shiloh" by Duane Helweg. She did say that her cabin was struck by one shell during the battle and the trees in the yard were shattered by the shelling. Two brothers alive at the start of the year and both dead soon after. Please post any information about the Sowell Brothers you may have. Ron
