Jim

Looks as if the 'Sunken Road' has become 'the thicket.' (Or have the signs at Shiloh always indicated the location in that manner?) In all my reading, I have never seen the Hurlbut-Prentiss-WHL Wallace Line referred to as 'the thicket' ...except on these signs at Shiloh NMP.

Just an observation...

Ozzy

N.B.  Good photos, anyway. Thanks for posting.

Jim......

Yes, I know.  The new signs look great.  A lot of the parks are sprucing up for the National Parks anniversary.  Too bad the local birds had to mark some of them with their graffiti.  ;)

( I was referring to the background scenery looking the same!)

Thanks Jim. The new signs look great! First take here is that they do a somewhat better job of clearing away some of the confusion than did the old signs. That's not meant to be a knock on the old signs, just saying that it was time for an update, and these look like they do the job very well.

On the two mystery stops, my understanding is that those are labeled J.O. Tour Stop #1a, J.O. Tour Stop #1b, and J.O. Tour Stop #2. I take it they're still working on markers up for the additional J.O. Tour Stops as well. :)

I think that term is used some in one or more of the major books on the battle, but I couldn't quote an exact passage. The original sign beside Duncan Field along the Main Corinth Road, at Tour Stop 3, was titled The Hornet's Nest. You looked up from that sign, and there was Duncan Field right in front of you. No wonder it confused so many people, myself included for several years.

Ozzy, sorry, I wasn't ignoring your post, just missed it somehow. There seems to be a rethinking of the battle that includes what areas are called. There is some question as to whether the Bloody Pond should be called that at all and I've even heard some question if it even existed at the time of the battle. I tend to not notice a lot of things that don't include the 16th WI, so my opinion is limited.

When they started the new signs, I decided to wait until they were all done and get pictures all at once (Yeah, right, I'm such a great photographer, I had to go back for two reshoots!). I was waiting to find out what this was going to be:

6 T.S.#5 3.JPG

When I was there last week, there was a big, green, ugly metal box there and I thought it was an electrical junction box. Wrong!

6 T.S.#5 4.JPG

So then when I was at Tour Stop#7 with Jeani Cantrell I noticed this down in Fraley Field:

8 T.S.#7 3.JPG

8 T.S.#7 4.JPG

8T.S.#7 5.JPG

And then when I was in the National Cemetery I found this:

They've hid em all over the Park, I guess.

if id known you needed tour stop signs could have come up with some to display at your special tour stops...the new wayside exhibits feature very pertinate drwaings for each location...when visiting get out and look closely at each they all tell the story that lays before you.
