John C Rushing

Recommended Posts

With the help of several good informative posts,in response to two earlier postings concerning the Russian Tenant Field, it is believed that John C Rushing who farmed his own farm in the 11th Civil District of Hardin County, above the Snake Creek, also farmed the property known as the Russian Tenant Farm below the Snake Creek in the 15th Civil District.  Two or more of the responders have suggested this occurred because it is known that the name Rushing was altered during common everyday usage when the Rushing family dropped the letter g at the end of the name.  The resulting sound of the name sounded more like Russian then the intended Rush in.  The result was the name Russian was applied to the field.  Yes, because John Rushing did not own the property but only worked it, it became descripted as a tenant farm.  And no, there was no Russian on the farm.

Thanks to Mona, CD, Grandpa, Duane Helwig and specially Nancy who is a direct descendant of the Rushing family.  Combined, they made the change of the Rushing name to Rushin clear.  The name Russian quickly followed resulting in the Russian Tenant field.  I'm satisfied with this explanation of this curious name and have concluded my search about it.

Thanks to all
