Grant’s 9:30 a.m. arrival at Pittsburg Landing

HI Mona, we don't know when this picture was taken, it might have been after Colonel Hildebrand died a little over a year after Shiloh. I have seen photographs from this period of horses with the empty saddle when a man never returned.

As for Nomad, in all accounts I have read his great size is always mentioned. To me he is a classic war horse, of the tradition of carrying men with armor. Colonel Hildebrand didn't wear armor of course but by all accounts he was a very large man for the time. Hildebrand was a major general of militia in Ohio and he and his horse were well known.
