Name that Road

Circumstances and common sense. That's how and why the Sunken Road was chosen for a defensive position, and why The River Road was chosen for the same reason later in the day. That's about as complicated as it gets.

Maybe you are correct. But, then, how could such an obvious, common-sense location be mistaken, after the battle? As Don Carlos Buell records in Shiloh Reviewed, page 509, "Sherman indicated on the Official Map that his furthest line of withdrawal towards Pittsburg Landing was sited west of Tillman Hollow -- half a mile in error."

Just another piece to the puzzle that is Shiloh...
