Healing the wounds...

Recommended Posts

In 1904, Basil Duke, former Confederate cavalry officer, was asked to speak at the dedication of Illinois monuments at Shiloh Battlefield. His remarks concluded:

"When a people renders such honors to the heroic dead [of both sides], it honors itself. The national care bestowed on this historic spot is as much a potent lesson to the future as a sacred duty to the past, for it commemorates the virtues without which nations can not survive. May those who fell here never be forgotten, and may these monuments erected to their memory remain as enduring admonition to the youth of succeeding generations, to love and serve their country equally as well."

I understand the reason behind this post, and while it's okay in and of itself, if it starts to get out of hand it's going to be closed. We're not discussing modern-day issues on this board, even by stealth.
