Did someone lose their dentures at Shiloh?

Recommended Posts

It is said that, "If you put half a dozen 50-year old men in a room together in 1860, you'd get a full set of teeth." It was common practice (and least expensive option) during the 19th Century to simply remove teeth that were causing problems. Those with means, got dentures.

When speaking of "a man with missing teeth at Shiloh," I ran across a newspaper article some time ago that claimed, "Bishop and General Leonidas Polk only had a couple of teeth in his mouth." Although I have been unable to track down that newspaper, the attached link seems to confirm "the poor condition of General Polk's teeth."
