W S Hillyer Letter - Grant at Shiloh

Recommended Posts

The 1st paragraph contains this statement: "After the unprofitable years at Hardscrabble...."  Hardscrabble was the original name of the town, Hazel Green, WI, where my Grandfather grew up and is buried.  I have often imagined Capt. Grant coming up from Galena, IL to Hardscrabble on his fur and pelt buying trips and meeting a young John Oates.

Sharon, I fear you are probably right.  I have looked over the years for proof that Grant was actually in Hardscrabble, WI before the war, with no luck.  I'm pretty sure he was there, but there are no "Grant slept here" signs anywhere to help out.
