Apparently the answer would be, "Civilization." It says right there in the header, "A Journal of Civilization."

Seriously though, the Harper's articles are worth a read, and not just the ones on Shiloh. It's sort of like the 1860's version of breaking news. Plus, it's one of those 'first drafts of history,' as the saying has it.

I think the main article on Shiloh is the one that appears in the April 26th issue...


Compare what it says there to what we know, or at least think we know, about the battle now.

Also, on that cover above, what's interesting to me about that is the officers they chose to include, out of all the ones they could have. This is less than one month after Shiloh, and these are the men they were touting as the heroes of the battle. Some of them wouldn't exactly be considered household names today, or even that closely associated with Shiloh, unless perhaps you were a student of the battle. And yet here, less than one month after the battle, they're being touted in a national publication as heroes.

And doesn't the picture of Sherman make him look a little like Abe Lincoln?
